Thought Leadership

Our community of companies includes global leaders in sustainability.  We seek to bring together corporate, academic and non-profit thought leaders to discuss successes and innovations. In addition, we help to raise awareness of the sustainability efforts of our companies, non-profit leaders and other stakeholders by hosting Bell Ringings and other events in our historic and renowned facilities.

In 2010, NYSE Euronext and the Yale Chief Executive Leadership Institute hosted the inaugural Green Summit at the New York Stock Exchange in conjunction with the 40th anniversary of Earth Day. The event featured leaders from the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Department of Energy, and corporate and academic sectors who explored effective ways to achieve environmental sustainability and to grow business and the economy through green initiatives.

The summit provided an opportunity for NYSE-listed issuers and industry thought leaders to come together for insight and to further their own “green” initiatives. Following the initial session, Strategies for Building Eco-Advantage, participants rang the Opening Bell to celebrate Earth Day.  The summit concluded with the ringing of the NYSE Closing Bell by Global Green USA, the American arm of Green Cross International, a non-profit organization founded to create a new approach to solving the world's most pressing environmental challenges.

Several companies participating in the summit displayed their “green” technologies inside and outside the NYSE:

  • United Parcel Service, Inc. displayed its hybrid electric package delivery car
  • Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F) displayed its electric and hybrid vehicles
  • Hewlett Packard Co. displayed a climate wall
  • Waste Management, Inc. (NYSE: WM) displayed reversible vending machines
